Dr. George Flanagan
Senior Minister
Our Senior Minister at Red Bridge Christian Church is Dr. George Flanagan. Most folks here call him George.
Before coming to Red Bridge, he was a hospital chaplain, an associate pastor, a music minister, and a school teacher. Out of the richness of his diverse experience, he draws on many facets of life to illustrate his teaching, and he likes to use story and song in his preaching.
George’s favorite recreation is music. He enjoys playing and singing traditional folk and acoustic gospel music but also enjoys listening to cool jazz as well as baroque and classical music. He enjoys reading what others write about the church and ministry, but he also likes an occasional “whodunit” as a change of pace.
He is an Eagle Scout, and he helps prepare Boy Scout Troop chaplains and Boy Scout summer camp chaplains. Based on years of ministry in the healthcare setting, he teaches clinical ethics to medical students and consults with area hospital ethics committees. He is married to Lyndia, and they have two adult children and a granddaughter. They make their home in Lee’s Summit.
George’s degrees come from William Jewell College, Central Missouri State University, and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He believes we learn from the religious beliefs, traditions, and experiences of all human beings, but that our own faith as the Church comes through the unique revelation of God in Jesus Christ. As a Disciple, he affirms that the essence of the church lies in ministry rising out of faith community, and he embraces the historic Disciples motto: “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.”
